The restaurant takes its name from the tower of the Palazzo Comunale. The origin of the name of the tower dates back several centuries to when its first bell-ringer, Giovanni Ducci, was known for his admirable habit of spending all of his earnings on food and drink. So much so, that his fellow Siennese nicknamed him the wage-eater or, more simply, the eater. In consequence, the tower began to be called the Tower of the Eater, Torre del Mangia. |
