Why "Al Mangia"?

The restaurant takes its name from the tower of the Palazzo Comunale. The origin of the name of the tower dates back several centuries to when its first bell-ringer, Giovanni Ducci, was known for his admirable habit of spending all of his earnings on food and drink. So much so, that his fellow Siennese nicknamed him the wage-eater or, more simply, the eater. In consequence, the tower began to be called the Tower of the Eater, Torre del Mangia.
